The Finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima is a guitar virtuoso who takes the electric guitar to the 21st
century. Upon taking up residence in the neon-lit metropolis of Berlin, he met double bass
player Oliver Potratz and drummer Oliver Steidle, both masters of their instruments. This trio
became companions on a musical journey that has spanned over ten years. They have searched
for their own sound and have subsequently defined that sound by challenging the borders of
musical possibility.
When combining Finland and Berlin, one achieves original, wild and creative jazz music.
The music maintains a bit of a Kaurismäki-film feel, but it is also as rhythmic and provocative
as the city of Berlin. Klima Kalima uses elements of rock, blues and folk to give their
modern jazz sound a tawdry accent. The latest CD “Loru” came out in March 2010 by a
well-known German jazz label Enja Records. Their earlier CDs “Chasing yellow” and
"Helsinki on my mind” got internationally great reviews. They won the “Neuer Deutscher
Jazzpreis” 10 000 e in 2008.
KALLE KALIMA has studied both at the Sibelius Academy Department of Jazz in Helsinki as well as at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. In his music elements of Jazz and Rock are mixed in unique way. He has played a.o. with Anthony Braxton, Tony Allen, Jimi Tenor, Jazzanova, Ed Schuller, Simon Stockhausen, Tomasz Stanko, Linda Sharrock and Marc Ducret.
OLIVER POTRATZ has studied bass at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule as well as at UdK in Berlin. He has played a.o. with Carsten Daerr Trio, Rosa Rauschen, Peter Fulda, John Schröder, Hayden Chisholm, Rolf Kühn,Tomasz Stanko, Gitte Haenning, Chr. Lauer, Johannes Lauer, Christopher Dell and Daniel Erdmann.
OLIVER STEIDLE is the leader of the band „SoKo Steidle“ and a member of the well-known band „Der Rote Bereich“; also played concerts with Louis Sclavis, Tomasz Stanko, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alexander von
Schlippenbach, Sean Bergin, Simon Nabatov, Richie Beirach. He won the „New German Jazzprice“ twice, in 2006 and 2008 and the price for best Soloperfomance at the „New German Jazzprice“ in 2008.
